Derry Christmas trees and decor damaged in multiple acts of vandalism

People have been climbing trees and damaging decorations in acts of vandalism in Derry.

This has occurred in not just one but multiple incidents of "damage to baubles and people climbing the trees," Derry City and Strabane District Council said.

Multiple baubles on the Guildhall Square tree were reportedly smashed earlier in December.

And a council spokesperson confirmed there were "a number of further incidents of vandalism and tampering with the Christmas trees in the city centre" over the weekend.

The tree in Guildhall Square in the city centre is of particular concern, BBC reports.

Mayor Graham Warke appealed to the public for the second time this month to have "a bit of sense and some respect for public property."

Speaking to BBC Radio Foyle on Monday, December 6, the DUP councillor said if this vandalism does not stop immediately, the council may put barricades around the trees.

"It's something that I really don't want to be seeing, but it all depends on the cost," he said, "There are young families who are there to enjoy it, but there are certain people just spoiling it."

A statement from PSNI said: "People of this city have put in hard work to bring light and joy after a hard few years, this act of vandalism is really frustrating for everyone in the city."

A Derry City and Strabane District Council spokesperson encouraged the public to report any incidents of vandalism to the police.

"PSNI, Community Safety Wardens and CCTV operators are keeping a close eye on Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place in particular," they added.
