Derry café hosting mental health coffee morning to help loyal customer

A popular Derry city centre café will be hosting a coffee morning this weekend to help a loyal customer fundraising for mental health charity Mind.

Brick & Feather, the dog-friendly café situated in Derry's Great James Street, opened in the summer of this year, and has already become a firm favourite in the city.

As well as its food, the café has introduced 'Sound on Saturdays' in which a Jazz trio entertains customers who can donate to the local music scene.

This weekend, however, Brick & Feather will host a coffee morning, in aid of mental health charity, Mind.

A loyal customer of the café and mental health nurse, Amy McCool, is undertaking a massive challenge in running and walking 100 miles over the month of October in aid of Mind.

Amy told MyDerry about her fundraiser and this special coffee morning.

She said: "I am a mental health nurse and throughout the pandemic I have seen both in work and in my personal life the impact it has had on the mental health of a large majority of the population.

"I was out walking with my dog Harry for my charity fundraiser and we stopped in Brick & Feather for a pitstop and got talking about mental health with Clodagh and Sean.

"Even just having the conversation was important as the reason I am doing the fundraiser is to raise awareness and get more people talking about mental health and accepting it as 'normal'.

"It was lovely to get talking. Then Clodagh so kindly agreed to do something in her beautiful café for world mental health day, and they set up their mental health coffee morning."

On a post on their Facebook and Instagram, Brick & Feather said: "Being situated below Brick & Feather 42 Therapy, we are very much aware of the importance of the work that Mind do.

"We will be collecting cash donations for Amy’s fundraiser. All puppuccinos will be £1, with all proceeds being donated to Mind."

The mental health coffee morning will begin at 10am on Sunday, October 10, with music starting at midday.
