Derry band dedicate fundraiser gig to member's late mum

A Derry band have invited music lovers to their fundraising gig at the beginning of February in memory of one member's late mum.

The band, Yunga, will host the gig in Sandinos alongside Fake Friends, Tramp and Arn, with all proceeds going to Foyle Hospice.

The band spoke to MyDerry about this incredible initiative in memory of their loved one.

They said: "Our bassist and vocalist Tiernan's mum Cathy passed away on the February 12 in the Foyle Hospice after fighting a long battle with a brain tumour. She was such a caring person who always put everyone in front of herself and was a highly respected nurse in Altnegalvin Hospital.

"Everyone thought the world of her. She was a loving person, loving nurse and loving mammy."

The band expressed how they wanted to raise funds for Foyle Hospice after the care they took for Tiernan's beloved mum Cathy.

they said: "How the fundraiser came about was that Tiernan always had it in his head that he wanted to do some sort of fundraiser for the Foyle Hospice and all of us sat down and decided to plan it along with a few others, shoutout to Neasa from Fake Friends.

"In a night we had the venue booked , had two other bands booked and some raffle prizes sorted and then it’s just all fell into place all that’s left is to play the gig itself!"

Yunga have been a band for around a year or so now with playing numerous shows in and around Derry, with gigs beyond their home city planned coming into the summer months.

They said: "The band consists of Kian Lampert on guitar and vocals, Tiernan McHugh on bass and vocals, Conor O’Hara on guitar and vocals and Joshua Peoples on drums. All four of us have shared the same vision since becoming a band. And it’s to make a racket.

"It’s worked so far and people are enjoying it so we aren’t gonna change it. Our name comes from the German word jüngs which translates into guys. Just four guys who love making music!

"YUNGA along with Fake Friends, Arn, and Tramp will be taking on Sandinos on the 2nd February at 8pm . £5 entry on the door with raffle on the door with so many great prizes. All Proceeds are going to Foyle Hospice in memory of Cathy McHugh."
