Derrius Guice says NFL preseason is still valuable for players

Count Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice among those who don’t want to see the NFL reducing the number of preseason games down from four.

The quality of the preseason games, coaching staffs not playing starters much and the annual news cycle of serious injuries in exhibitions once again has the length of the preseason under fire.

But Guice provided a counterpoint, saying the preseason is a critical part of the developmental process for young players.

“I feel like it’s needed,” Guice said, according to Jordan Dajani of CBSSports. “You got guys coming straight out of college to the NFL, it’s a whole different ball game. We need preseason, guys need to get out there in preseason and see what’s up.”

It is, of course, a valid point, though also an interesting one considering his rookie season ended last year due to an injury suffered in the preseason.

Guice won’t have a hard time finding people who agree with him though, as the preseason is valuable for younger players and the evaluation of rosters. This debate isn’t one that will simply go away soon.
