Derrick Williams ruled out of Ireland squad for Denmark game with injury

Derrick Williams has today been ruled out of Monday’s Euro 2020 showdown with Denmark at Aviva Stadium.

The Blackburn Rovers defender scored his first goal for Ireland in last night’s 3-1 friendly win over New Zealand.

But he limped off with a calf strain in the 56th minute, with Callum O’Dowda on to replace him.

Williams is behind Enda Stevens in the pecking order for left-back and would not have started against the Danes.

Ireland boss Mick McCarthy said: “Derrick felt his calf in the second half and our medical team have assessed him today.

“He will go back to his club and we wish him well. He was one of our best players last night and deserved his goal.”

Celtic’s Lee O’Connor, who made his debut at right-back against the Kiwis and assisted Callum Robinson’s goal, has rejoined the Under-21 squad as expected.

He played last night as he was suspended for the Under-21s win in Armenia yesterday but will feature for Stephen Kenny’s team against Sweden on Tuesday.

McCarthy still has 25-players available to face the Danes and won’t be adding to the squad who will watch tonight’s Denmark-Gibraltar game as a group.
