Derrick Williams has laid out an impressive case for inclusion against Georgia, according to Mick McCarthy.
The Blackburn Rovers centre-back was not in the initial squad for this double-header but was added when Shane Duffy’s participation was initially in doubt.
But while Waterford man Williams prefers playing in the centre, he is a dab hand at left-back and won his only Irish cap there away to France in 2018.
Enda Stevens’ suspension means the left-back berth is up for grabs and Wolves ace Matt Doherty remains the front runner to fill in.
But McCarthy said: “I’ve got a couple of options and I’ve been impressed with Derrick Williams coming in. He’s trained exceptionally well. But Matt Doherty can play either full back.”
