Mock draft season is moving full steam ahead as we approach March, and when it comes to the New York Giants, many of the projections are wildly similar.
With a need at offensive tackle, the vast majority of mock drafts have the Giants taking Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, Louisville’s Mekhi Becton, Georgia’s Andrew Thomas or Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs in Round 1. However, some still lean defensive heavy and project Clemson edge rusher Isaiah Simmons or Ohio State cornerback Jeffrey Okudah to the Giants at No. 4.
Overall, those are the most common six names attached to the Giants at this point, and they make up roughly 85% of all published mock drafts to date.
Some outliers have the Giants looking at Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb with their first pick, but those are few and far between.
Even more uncommon, but with suddenly growing popularity, is the projection of Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown going to the Giants at No. 4 overall.
As Big Blue View recently broke down, Brown now makes up 4.2% of the Giants’ projected picks, which is by far the lowest of any player, but there are a couple writers clinging to that name.
You won’t see Brown on any ESPN or NFL Network mocks, so take his presence with a grain of salt, but both Clint Clearwater of The Phinsider and Robby Esch of The Huddle Report are sticking with the Auburn defensive tackle going to Big Blue.
The reasoning behind Brown to the Giants? Well, sadly, none has been provided, but it’s likely based off the assumption that the team is unable to re-sign Leonard Williams before or during free agency.
Even still, the idea that the Giants would take a defensive tackle in Round 1 — no matter how good he may be — makes little sense when examining their roster and needs.
Williams or no Williams, the Giants have much more desperate needs than an interior defensive lineman, so don’t expect to see this long-shot play out in the 2020 NFL Draft.
