Dermot Whelan reveals friend Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy introduced him to his wife Corrina

Dermot Whelan has revealed that his friend and Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy introduced him to his wife Corrina.

Today FM presenter Whelan met actor Murphy over 20 years ago on a film set and they have been good friends ever since.

Cork native Cillian, 44, has written the foreword for Dermot's new book and introduced the DJ to his wife.

Dermot said: "Me and him go back a long, before he was famous.

"In fact he introduced me to my wife.

"We were going around pubs pretending, just for the craic, that myself and Cillian were poets and we'd go into pubs and start making up really awful poetry on the spot.

"That's how I met my wife. I pretended to be a poet with Cillian, making up really terrible poems."

The book is called Mind Full and is mianly about meditation.

Comedian Whelan spoke about the moment he realised that he needed a new way of managing stress.

He told RTE One's The Today Show: ""It started for me, I suppose before Republic of Telly and all that.

"There was a time in my life, kind of around 2006/2007 when I was a little bit stressed out, little bit burned out and I ended up having a panic attack.

"That kind of woke me up a little bit and I knew I had to find a better way to manage stress than just partying.

"That kind of set me on a path and I kind of stumbled into meditation. Like most people, I had a lot of preconceptions about it.

"I thought it was for very hippy types who burn sage every time they walk into a room and eat hummus all day long.

"I quickly realised there's a lot of great science in it and it's just a very useful, easy way of destressing and un-wrecking your head, as I like to call it."

Republic of Telly host Whelan, 48, compared stress to listening to Westlife and that both are ok in small doses.

He said: "There's a lot of science, particularly in the last 10 years that actually shows that stress has got a bit of bad reputation.

"Sometimes stress is a little bit like say Westlife.

"People gave out about Westlife and kind of slagged them off for years but then when they broke up and came back, people went, 'Do you know what? Westlife are OK in small doses'.

"Stress is exactly the same. A little bit of stress can help us perform at our best.

It can hep us overcome obstacles you know like giving a presentation or passing a driving test or having children.

"But if that stress is allowed to continue all the time, that's when it starts to become long term or chronic stress.

"And that's the one that really wears us down and makes us anxious and depressed and affects our sleep and all those kinds of things."
