Dermot O'Leary takes aim at Piers Morgan over 'incorrect human response' to Meghan

Dermot O'Leary has taken aim at Piers Morgan over his disbelieving remarks about Meghan Markle regarding her confession that she experienced suicidal thoughts.

The 55-year-old quit Good Morning Britain earlier this week after saying that he didn't believe the Duchess of Sussex considered taking her life, sparking a furious backlash.

He has refused to back down from his view on the explosive Oprah Winfrey interview and later reiterated his opinion on Twitter.

Dermot addressed the interview today as he presented This Morning with Alison as he sighed and said that it had been "an emotional week".

"What a week," Alison agreed.

Dermot added: "It's been a depressing week."

Alison continued: "It's been the biggest royal scoop ever. Unbelievable! What did you make of it?"

"Look, we haven't got all day and most of it's already been said," Dermot said. "But I think empathy is the word that you take away from it."

Dermot and Alison Hammond discussed the interview on This Morning (ITV)

"Definitely," Alison replied. "I actually thought it was a really lovely interview. I thought it was an interview where my mouth was on the floor the whole way through.

"I was drinking tea, I was eating popcorn - just to find that knowledge about the Royal Family and what was going on."

Dermot said: "I think it's ok to watch and have questions, I think it's OK to ask why they chose to do it, I think it's OK to want clarification on some of the accusations. But if someone says, 'I feel suicidal' and someone says-"

"You've got to take that seriously," Alison insisted.

"Yeah, absolutely," Dermot insisted. "The only correct human response to that is an empathetic one."
