Dermot O'Leary says there's only one 'correct human response' to Meghan Markle's comments after Piers Morgan row

Dermot O'Leary says there's only one 'correct human response' to Meghan Markle's admission she felt suicidal while pregnant.

The Duchess of Sussex made the heartbreaking claim during her explosive, tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Appearing on This Morning for the first time since the two-hour bombshell chat aired with Meghan and Prince Harry, hosts Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond discussed what they thought.

ITV presenter Dermot began: "It has been an emotional week. It has been a depressing week."

"What a week," Alison agreed before continuing: "It's been the biggest royal scoop ever. Unbelievable! What did you make of it?"

"Look, we haven't got all day and most of it's already been said," Dermot said. "But I think empathy is the word that you take away from it."

Alison replied: "Definitely. I actually thought it was a really lovely interview. I thought it was an interview where my mouth was on the floor the whole way through.

"I was drinking tea, I was eating popcorn - just to find that knowledge about the Royal Family and what was going on."

Dermot went on: "I think it's ok to watch and have questions, I think it's ok to ask why they chose to do it, I think it's ok to want clarification on some of the accusations. But if someone says, 'I feel suicidal' and someone says..."

"You've got to take that seriously," Alison interjected.

"Yeah, absolutely," Dermot said. "The only correct human response to that is an empathetic one."

It comes after Piers Morgan said he "didn't believe" she had suicidal thoughts which triggered more than 40,000 complaints to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom.

On Monday's Good Morning Britain, while discussing Meghan and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah, Piers said: "I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report," hours after the interview aired in the US.

"The fact that she's fired up this onslaught against our royal family I think is contemptible."

The 55-year-old has since doubled down on his comments after dramatically quitting his ITV role.
