Dermot O'Leary opens This Morning with 'defiant' statement amid controversy and 'toxic' claims

Dermot O'Leary didn't shy away from addressing the controversy surrounding This Morning at the moment, as he opened Monday's show with a 'defiant' speech, which was backed up by Alison Hammond, who told viewers the 'show would continue.'

Two days after Phillip Schofield quit the ITV daytime show, Dermot and Alison paid a very awkward and very brief tribute to their now ex colleague, referring to him as 'one of the best' but then, just days later, and after Dermot and Alison had hosted This Morning for a full week, Phillip released a bombshell statement in which he admitted having an affair with a young staff member on the programme.

Describing the relationship as 'unwise but not illegal,' Phillip apologised to his ITV bosses, co-workers, agents, lawyers and family for lying to them about hus involvement with the young men, with his agents promptly dropping him and Phillip leaving ITV with immediate effect.

Several former This Morning stars have spoken out about the famous host and the show itself, with Eamonn Holmes alleging that senior members of the ITV team knew 'what can kind of man' Phillip was and then claiming that he and Ruth Langsford were 'deceived' by their former co-star.

Dr Ranj, while noy directly addressing the situation with Phillip, said he had become concerned about the 'toxic' culture on This Morning, something Phillip then snapped back at on his Instagram, accusing those making accusations as 'having a grudge' against him., something he was branded 'delusional' for by Eamonn.

As all of this was going on online, Dermot and Alison had to host Monday's show, with Dermot having the first word, as he said: "We know we have been in the news at the moment. But just from both of us, and the whole team here, the crew, the guys downstairs, we love making this show for all of you."

Alison added: "We really do and that's exactly what we're gonna do - we're continuing to do that."
