Dermot Gallagher weighs in on Celtic penalty controversy as former Premier League whistler has his say on Kevin Clancy call

Dermot Gallagher insists Kevin Clancy was absolutely spot on when he awarded Aberdeen a penalty at Celtic Park on Sunday.

Dons man David Bates went down under the challenge of Liel Abada in the first half and the referee pointed straight to the spot.

Lewis Ferguson stepped up to beat Joe Hart and make it 1-1, though Jota would win the game for Celtic in the second half.

Former English Premier League referee Gallagher analyses weekend decisions in his weekly 'Ref Watch' segment on Sky Sports and ran the rule over the award.

And while some Celtic fans felt the award was soft as Abada tried to pull out, the former top flight official felt Clancy got the call spot on.

Speaking on Sky Sports Gallagher gave a clear verdict: "Penalty. Unfortunate, but it's a penalty, isn't it?

"He dangles a leg, he doesn't mean to trip him but he does trip him.

"The referee has an absolutely perfect view."

It comes after Celtic legend John Hartson slammed the decision on club TV, insisting that Bates had bought the spot kick.

He insisted: "It's Abada on Bates, but I've seen this now three or four times, and for me there is no contact.

"Abada pulls his foot away. Not only is it not a penalty for me, but it's a yellow card for Bates also.

"But the referee couldn't point his finger quick enough to the spot.

"I genuinely think there is no contact at all there and Abada and Celtic have been really hard done by.

"Lewis Ferguson steps up and was really calm, and takes a good penalty, but it should never have got to there.

"I genuinely don't think Abada touches Bates at all. I think they have bought a decision off the referee there Aberdeen."
