Dermot Gallagher in Rangers penalty acquittal as he tells Hibs why their shouts were always in vain

Former referee Dermot Gallagher insists Willie Collum was right not to award Hibs a penalty against Rangers on Boxing Day.

There were loud appeals in the second half when Joe Newell slumped to the Ibrox turf after matchwinner Ianis Hagi raised a boot while trying to clear the danger.

But no foul was awarded and former Premier League heavyweight Gallagher insists the right call was made because there he believes there was no contact made by the Romanian.

Rangers would go onto win the game 1-0 and the Englishman insists the right call was made on the field despite fierce complaints from those of a Hibs persuasion.

Speaking on Sky Sports Ref Watch, he said: "The problem is for it to be a penalty, he has to make physical contact. If you look, I don't think (Hagi) does.

"I think his boot is high but he doesn't actually catch the player. It's very much like Ruben Dias and Danny Ings that we discussed last week.

"I don't think physical contact is made with the player so the referee cannot give a penalty."

But it could be classed as dangerous and the IFAB rules state: "An indirect free kick is awarded if a player plays in a dangerous manner."

Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury."
