Dermot Gallagher in Rangers 'handball' verdict as Celtic players told they 'know the rule' after Goldson penalty claim

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has defended Connor Goldson and referee Steven McLean after the Rangers stopper survived a handball claim in the box against him during the clash with Celtic.

Gallagher put the flashpoint in focus after Michael Beale's side ran out 3-0 winners at Ibrox, with some Celtic fans believing a penalty should have been awarded when the ball appeared to flick off Rangers defender Goldson's hand as the first 45 came to its conclusion after a cross into the box. However, the experienced whistler has backed up ref McLean as he insisted there was nothing that could be done by the Light Blues' centre-back.

VAR backed up the official on the pitch and Gallagher insisted there was no reason for interference - as he pointed to the reaction of the Hoops players. He noted that no Celtic stars appealed for the spot kick on the pitch as he dissected the main flashpoint coming out of derby day.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, Gallagher said: "It can't be a penalty, can it? He has fallen to the ground and that arm is breaking his fall. His arm is clearly on the floor when it strikers it. There is no doubt about it. You can see the players reaction as well, they don't even appeal because they know now that is what the law is."
