Dermot Gallagher explains why referee was right not to award a penalty for Wolves against Liverpool

Anyone who watched Liverpool’s win over Wolves may wonder why a penalty wasn’t awarded in the early moments of the game.

Alisson Becker collided with Nelson Semedo in the opening minutes of the Premier League clash at Molineux, but referee Craig Pawson waved play on.

Many believed that a spot-kick should have been awarded, and later in the same there was an instance where Sadio Mane was clipped by Rui Patricio, but stayed on his feet so no penalty was given.

Back to the instance involving Alisson, former top flight referee Dermot Gallagher has explained why Pawson was correct to wave play on.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Gallagher said: “The ball actually strikes Semedo’s arm, so once it was thrown to VAR a handball would have been given. So not a penalty.”

Gallagher continued: “What happened is they (VAR) looked at it and didn’t think it was a clear and obvious error by the referee.

“If the penalty was given and they then had to really analyse it before it’s taken - is there an offence in the build-up, is there an offside - they would have picked that up.”
