Dermot Bannon’s emotional breakdown on Room To Improve special leaves viewers in tears

Dermot Bannon broke down into tears as he spoke about his late father in last night's Room To Improve special

'Room to Improve: Dermot’s Home’ concluded last night and viewers were given a rare insight into the celeb architect's home and personal life.

The episode brought some truly funny moments as Dermot made a host of mistakes inclduing the budget, the garden wall, the chimney and the shed to name a few RSVP Live reports.

But viewers were left in tears after Dermot could be seen welling up as he opened up about his late father.

In a bid to scale back the staggering €100,000 garden budget, Dermot enlisted the help of his family to clear the overgrown space - something he did in his previous home some 12 years ago too.

Afterward,  Dermot  was thanking his brother, Podge, and cousins for their labour of love, but got emotional thinking of his horticulturist father, Jim, who was there for the previous garden clear out.

A clearly emotional Dermot said: "You don’t know how much it means to have you guys with me here today,"

"It’s really nice to have family around. Because the last time I did a garden, my dad was here.

"So it’s just lovely that you guys are here with me."

Viewers around the country took to Twitter to express their sympathies with Dermot and relished at seeing such an openly vulnerable side to the architect.

“Dermot cries and the whole of ireland cries,”  wrote  one emotional viewer on Twitter.

“Just gone from comedy gold to tears in minutes,” added another.

“From giving out about Dermot all night to crying with him! To Jim,” saida third person.

"Dermot you have the Nation in tears but lovely to see emotion and cheers to your Dad. He would be so proud," wrote a fourth.

"Among all the procrastination and indecision, Dermot remembering his dad Jim while doing the garden was a very sweet moment," wrote another viewer.

Unsurprisingly, despite the tears, drama, delays and disasters, Dermot’s home was nothing short of spectacular - and the garden was pretty gorgeous too.
