Derelict shops torn down in busy town

Derelict shops have finally been torn down after years of lying empty.

The line of buildings along the roundabout on Leasowe Road in Wallasey Village have been reduced to a pile of rubble and will soon become shops and flats.

Wirral Council granted permission for the existing shops to be demolished and replaced with three new ground floor retail units and nine flats - one, one-bedroomed flat and eight two-bedroomed flats - in 2018.

Redevelopment, on behalf of Isle of Man-based applicant Sound Leisure Limited, does not include the wasteland to the left, this has a separate application in with Wirral Council, who granted permission to Tig Properties for the construction of a two-storey building with two retail units and two flats in May last year.

The owners of Stollies Cafe and Delicatessen posted a video of the demolition of the old nail bar and hair salon in progress and said: "Finally it’s coming down! Apartments and shops going up in 2022.

"What shops would everyone like to see in Wallasey village?"

They jokingly added: "The first one to say Starbucks or Costa gets a lifetime ban!"

While some were sad calling it the "end of an era", others were quick with their suggestions with want they wanted to see in the space.

Michael Kelly said: "Chinese restaurant be good."

Peter Dunning said: "Wagamama’s"

Sonia Fallows said: "End of an era lol I used that bus stop coming home from school."

Annette Brown said: "tbh a greengrocer's and a butcher's..."

And Sarah Lousie Cross and Beth Murray both agreed, simply adding: "Butcher."

But some had reservations about the redevelopment of the land without solving car parking issues.

Craig Breto Bretland said: "If the new shops are to survive it also needs to include a car park."

Karen Roberts said: "Going to be a fight for car parking space."
