Derelict church in Clifton is demolished after standing empty for 10 years

A church which has stood empty for 10 years in Clifton has been demolished.

The St Francis Church in Southchurch Drive was opened in 1957.

On Friday (May 31) work began to knock down the structure.

The building, which was built using brick, glass and concrete became known as the “People’s Church”.

However, by the mid-1990s the hall was only being used twice a week. A scheme was drawn up to extend and alter St Francis but the project never got beyond the drawing stage.

Church attendances had dwindled and the building was deteriorating badly.

But volunteers rallied round to spruce up the church for the 40th anniversary in 1997 and another funding campaign was launched.

But sadly the structure continued to deteriorate and in 2007, the estimated cost of roof repairs was £57,000 – a sum the church had no way of raising.

Water seeped into several parts of the nave and in 2009 the church had to be closed for worship on safety grounds.

It is not known what the land will be used for.
