Derelict Carrington home earns owner $200k in 15 months

RENOVATION PROJECT: The terrace at 67 Gipps Street, Carrington.

Waiting 15 months has seen the owner of a derelict Carrington terrace pocket more than $200,000.

A two-bedroomer on 107 square metres at 67 Gipps Street sold for $668,000 at auction after selling for $465,000 in July 2020.

It went virtually untouched in that time by the former owner, who had planned to renovate before returning to Western Australia.

A Mudgee couple, formerly of Newcastle, plan to take over the renovation project after falling in love with Carrington.

"The owner was delighted with the result," Ray White Newcastle and Lake Macquarie's Brett Bailey said.

"The neighbours are very impressed with the result and looking forward to the property being renovated."

Meanwhile, a three-bedroom Mayfield home at 100 Crebert Street is on the market for the second time in a year after undergoing a comprehensive renovation.

Set on 519 square metres near schools and an aged care facility, it will go to auction on November 13.

A guide has not been disclosed, but similar homes in the area have sold for upwards of $900,000.

"He's done an exceptional job doing it up - there's quality in the detail," Dowling Property Group's Steve Dorman said.

"It ticks a lot of boxes - professional couples, investors - it caters to a lot of people."

Mr Dorman said Mayfield was going through a transition period.

"You've got the new Coles shopping complex, there's more facilities being put in ... it looks like the start of maybe refurbishment.

"I think with a lot of younger people and more people wanting to live in the Mayfield area, it's going to improve the facilities."
