Derelict Blaydon Social Club to be demolished and replaced with 25 new homes

Plans to demolish an "eyesore" social club and build 25 new homes on the site have been given the green light.

Mr Gill is behind plans to pull down the empty Blaydon and District Social Club but keep the neighbouring Blaydon House building, which will be turned into three houses.

The rest of the homes will be a mixture of two and four bedroom houses and flats.

Council planners backed the application and recommended it for approval, despite admitting that it would cause harm to the conservation area.

Plans to move Gateshead special school to new site to cope with huge demand for places gathers pace

However, they said that it would be good for the economy and described the design as high quality.

A report to Gateshead Council said: "The application would introduce a development of high design quality into a currently vacant site.

"Together with the other benefits that the development will bring (e.g. economic benefits, long-term security of a heritage asset and security) are considered to significantly outweigh the harm to the heritage asset."

It also pointed out that both buildings have fell into "considerable disrepair" after years of being vacant.

At the planning committee meeting, councillors voted to approve the application.

Coun John McClurey said: "The pigeons are going to be homeless, there's going to be thousands of them, you have got to feel sorry for them.

"It's good that we're getting something done, it's been an eyesore for a long time."

Now the scheme is approved, the developer will have to sign up to a 'Section 106' agreement promising to provide affordable housing on the site or make a "proportionate off site contribution".

Under planning law, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing community and social infrastructure, which is needed as the result of new development.
