Derek Riordan makes Celtic insider information claim as he admits Gordon Strachan 'old granny' sketch nailed nightmare scenario

Raging Derek Riordan admits an infamous 'Only An Excuse' sketch knew what was happening behind the scenes at Celtic with Gordon Strachan in charge.

The former Hibs striker seem destined for stardom after leaving Easter Road for the Glasgow giants in 2006.

At the time Strachan labelled Riordan "the most natural finisher at the club" but refused to play him and eventually forced him to train on his own.

The frozen-out frontman admitted he had "virtually chucked it" in the period before he returned to the Hibees in 2008.

Riordan spent time in China at Shaanxi Chanba and down south at Bristol Rovers before rounding off his career with spells in the Scottish lower leagues.

The 37-year-old joined David Tanner on the he Edinburgh Football Show to look back on his career, and joked about the sketch which saw Jonathan Watson imitate Strachan and turn to 'someone's granny' and 'a jakie' before giving Riordan a run out at Celtic.

Riordan told Tanner: "At least even they knew what was happening at the club.

"Aye. It's funny. It was as funny as anything.

"Like I said at least Only an Excuse knew what was happening. It didn't bother me in a way.

"There was more chance of an old granny or an alkie getting on before me anyway!"

"So it was quite funny at the time. I remember that."
