Derek McInnes urges UEFA support as Aberdeen boss calls for financial support for Europa League away teams

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes wants UEFA to help financially support teams that are drawn away from home in the early rounds of the Europa and Champions League.

Club football’s governing body confirmed earlier this week that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a congested fixture calendar that all early rounds of its cup competitions will be contested in a single leg.

The first team out of the hat getting home advantage the whole way through the Europa League before the Champions League goes back to two-legs at the playoff stage.

It means Celtic, Motherwell, Rangers and the Dons could all end up with costly bills if they are drawn away and McInnes believes it is only right that UEFA help to cover the cost.

McInnes, speaking on RedTV, said:  “It was something that was mooted a few weeks ago and it kind of makes sense because we are behind with the scheduling and we need to work our way through these early rounds quickly.

“We will do what we are told and if it is a one-off game then we will treat it like a cup tie as we would domestically. We will look forward when it comes round but there is still a lot to be clarified on that.

“If we are drawn as the away team then can we get some money from UEFA to meet the cost of that? We will see what comes out but it is good we have that date now and something to work towards with European competition starting on the 27th August.”

Celtic’s Champions League assault will begin on the 18th or 19th of August.

Aberdeen and Motherwell will also go into the first hurdle of the Europa League on August 27th, with Rangers expected to come in the round later on September 17th.
