Derek McInnes tells Rangers boss Steven Gerrard 'Scottish football doesn't need saved'

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes insists "Scottish football doesn't need saved" after Steven Gerrard's comments about merging with the English leagues.

The idea of Rangers and Celtic moving down south has been floated numerous times over the years, though UEFA would likely stand against any such proposal.

This week Gerrard claimed that all Scottish clubs should have the opportunity to play in England, insisting any move would be "to save and help the Scottish game a lot".

The Aberdeen boss isn't of the same opinion though, insisting there's nothing that needs to be saved.

McInnes told BBC Scotland: "I think the product is good.

"Rangers and Celtic are doing well in Europe, which is brilliant to see.

"I think we have a good level in the league at the minute. I understand Steven's comments but I don't particularly agree with them. Rangers and Celtic have a real obligation to make the Scottish league as strong as possible, as we all have. We have to live within our means to do that.

"Scottish football doesn't need saved but we all have an obligation to make it even better."

Gerrard had talked up the idea on Jamie Carragher's The Greatest Game podcast.

The Rangers boss admitted: "It would be incredible. I don’t think it will ever happen because of the power of the other clubs.

"I would love the Scottish league to filter into the English leagues. All of them. To save and help the Scottish game a lot. It would be unbelievable. Could you picture now, the Premier League with those two clubs in it?"
