Derek McInnes reveals the Aberdeen season target he claims will appease angry fans

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes insists it's up to his players to show they can dig themselves out of their current slump.

The Pittodrie side are struggling in front of goal at the minute, firing a blank in their previous five games.

Their last goal in open play was in a 1-1 draw against Hearts at Tynecastle in their final game before the winter break.

Some Aberdeen fans have been critical of McInnes' perceived negative style of football, but the Dons boss insists the responsibility lies on the player's shoulders to show they can turn their fortunes around.

McInnes is also confident a third place finish is still well within their reach come the end of the season - something he believes, coupled with a strong Scottish Cup run, will appease the majority of angry punters.

He said: "The players need to grasp the fact we can’t just talk about what we’re going to do but actually do it.

"We are a team that is capable of going on a decent run and I believe the majority of the fans would see finishing third and a really good cup run as acceptable.

"I’m encouraged when I see Craig Bryson back in full training today and I believe we will finish third this season."

With games coming thick and fast, Aberdeen will have a chance to turn things around on Tuesday night away to Hamilton.

And McInnes believes if his side can put in a good display against Accies, they can kick on from there.

He added: "I don’t believe Hamilton will go down and I see a strength in their team. They have good options.

"I’m glad we have a game coming so quickly and a good performance can have a knock on effect."
