Derek McInnes responds to Aberdeen fan mutiny as boss admits dire need for transfers

Derek McInnes admitted the Red Army were right to turn on his Aberdeen team on Wednesday night.

Dons players were booed off after a poor display in the 1-0 loss to Motherwell that saw the Steelmen move four points clear in third place.

McInnes knows his team need strengthening and more creativity and a cutting edge up top – and is desperate to land Matty Kennedy, who has signed a pre-contract, from St Johnstone in this window.

McInnes said: “We’re looking for that kind of quality and consistency because we’re lacking in the final third. The fans’ reaction is understandable because we’re all frustrated.

“We needed a bit of good fortune but we lacked cutting edge and quality up front. That meant Motherwell got the points.

“I’m looking for more up front as we’re too reliant on Sam Cosgrove but apart from the goal, defensively, we were solid.

“But creativity, speed and quality in the final third has been lacking for months. Hopefully we can get the necessary players in. We lost the battle but we can win the fight and get a European spot.”

McInnes accepted his team were flat but is in no doubt they should have had a spot-kick when Andrew Considine was taken out by Declan Gallagher.

He added: “I thought we should have had a penalty.”

Delighted Stephen Robinson heralded Well’s display as one of the best road victories of his reign and hailed the impact of goal hero Liam Donnelly.

He said: “I’m delighted. It’s probably one of the best away performances I’ve had in my time here.

“Liam’s been a revelation this season and we miss him when he doesn’t play.”
