Derek McInnes leaves Aberdeen as Hibs' battle for third takes fresh twist

Hibs’ battle with Aberdeen for third place took a new twist with Derek McInnes reportedly set to leave the club.

His eight year reign at Pittodrie is about to end with the Scottish Sun reporting that a deal has been struck for McInnes to head for the exit.

He leaves the Dons three points adrift of Hibs in the Scottish Premiership table, although Jack Ross ' team have a game in hand.

Aberdeen failed to take advantage of St Johnstone beating Hibs at the weekend when they could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to St Mirren.

That appears to be the final straw for Dave Cormack, who has repeatedly stressed the importance of securing third place and the Europa League qualification that comes with it.

The club has a projected £5million funding gap to plug due to the lack of gate money this season, and Cormack obviously felt that the chances of boosting the coffers with Euro cash was slipping away with McInnes at the helm.

The relationship between owner and manager had become strained this season and results coupled with a chronic lack of goals has done little to help ease tensions.

Hibs are due to go to Pittodrie after the split in what could yet be a decisive game, but they’ll face a team under new management by then.

Former Aberdeen and Hibs midfielder Stpehen Glass has been touted for a move back to his formative club.

Glass is currently in charge of Atalanta United, who have an official partnership with the Dons thanks to Cormack’s involvement there.

Glass is currently head coach of the Georgia franchise’s second team, having briefly stepped into the top job after Frank de Boer’s sacking.

He’s understood to be highly thought of though and his ties to Aberdeen would likely make him a cautiously popular appointment with the fans.
