Derek McInnes issues Aberdeen squad challenge as he insists Dons are on track for European spot

Derek McInnes challenged his Aberdeen players to prove this is the best Pittodrie squad he has assembled after they reclaimed third spot.

The Dons manager was delighted to see his side come back from a Liam Gordon goal to win thanks to a controversial Sam Cosgrove penalty and then Ash Taylor's winner - his first goal since February.

Aberdeen, who are now six unbeaten, jumped above Hibs and McInnes is now setting his sights on securing a European spot.

The Dons boss said: “We are halfway through the league with that total of 38 points.

“We are well on track to securing another European spot but we still have it all to do. Everybody has told us this is the best squad we have but they are still being tested and we are stretched just now with injuries and suspensions but we are still digging out results like today.”

McInnes knew the howling wind and bumpy conditions were far from ideal but was delighted to see Taylor come up with a giant performance.

McInnes added: “He’ll get a bit of recognition because he scored the winning goal and rightly so.

“Ash doesn’t get, I don’t think, a full rep at times here. He has been outstanding and has been part of a back three that has three clean sheets and we are disappointed we didn’t make it four.

"He is a big lad and an easy target but games like that he stands up and was a giant for us today.  Good on him because it is not before time.”
