Derek McInnes insists Aberdeen 'rattled' Rangers and shut critics up with battling point

Aberdeen players have shut their critics up after leaving Rangers 'rattled' insisted Derek McInnes after watching his side snatch a draw.

The Dons looked down and out after half an hour with goals from Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack giving Rangers a comfortable lead.

But Jon Gallagher and Andrew Considine earned a point with a brilliant comeback and McInnes was left delighted with his players.

Aberdeen kept Rangers at bay in the second half with Alfredo Morelos struggling to get any chances against a tough Dons defence.

But it was the fact the game turned so quickly that pleased the Dons gaffer so much and he felt Rangers couldn't cope with how Aberdeen played.

He said: "We scored a very good equaliser and there’s a tinge of disappointment we didn’t win with Sam missing his chance in the second half.

"We had Rangers rattled though, there’s no doubt about it. We knocked them out of their stride and played the game we wanted it to be played in the second half. In the first half an hour, Rangers played the game the way they wanted it.

"I needed to see that from my team but it also shuts a few people up who have questioned that. The reference point for our season has been the two Old Firm games. We go into today’s game four points better off than we were last year but nobody wants to talk about that. The players are doing well and we’ve got a lot of new players here. What I needed to see and what the fans needed to see was that resilience second half.

"It’s a very important point because it keeps us unbeaten, keeps that run going that we’re on at the minute and takes us into the Hibs game where we want to go and win. December is an important month and drawing with this Rangers team at home is a very important point."

Lewis Ferguson battled hard in midfield and left it difficult for the likes of Steven Davis and Joe Aribo to create and McInnes was also thrilled with his performance.

He added: "Delighted to come back from 2-0 down against a very good Rangers team. I’ve seen this Rangers team when they go 2-0 up it goes to three, four and five. They’re a good side. A combination of their good play in that opening half an hour where we got absolutely murdered, we never got going in the game.

"If anything we were to pumped up and had too much adrenaline. We never settled on the ball and were guilty of giving it away. Too hurried, too rushed and we looked spooked. Once we dropped Lewis Ferguson down one away from Cosgrove. He was the youngest man on the park but took more responsibility than anyone.

"The nature of the game it’s natural to think that way because both goals we had possession of the ball and gave it away. Some of the quality of Rangers play and movement is good and we’ve seen that but I expect my team to look after the ball better than what they did but they were rushed.

"They never settled. I think moving Ferguson down one and getting him on the ball helped and brought a composure to our play. What it did when we were out of the ball was gave us a belief in our press to win the ball back."
