Derek McInnes in strident Neil Lennon defence as Aberdeen boss hails Celtic counterpart's 'brilliant' record

Derek McInnes says Celtic boss Neil Lennon deserves more respect.

The Aberdeen gaffer will attempt to inflict pain on his under-fire Parkhead rival at Hampden in Sunday's Scottish Cup semi-final.

Lennon has been heavily criticised following defeats to Rangers and AC Milan and draws against the Dons and Lille in their last four games.

Lennon even had to defend his position as Celtic manager but McInnes says the flak is unjustified.

He said: “You’re never surprised at the level of criticism some managers get and it can be unfair. Neil’s record is right up there.

“He’s been a brilliant manager for Celtic and I’m sure he’ll continue to be that. At times managers are deserving of a bit more respect, certainly managers with Neil’s record.”

Meanwhile, McInnes says Dons go into the semi-final with confidence after a 3-3 draw with the Premiership champion last time out.

He said: “I do feel as though we’re in a good place right now. We look a better team and we back ourselves.

“We want to get to the final and a bit closer to silverware.”
