Derek McInnes in broadcaster plea as Aberdeen boss outlines plans to survive crisis

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes insists the TV deal with Sky Sports can help save Scottish football during the ongoing crisis.

With next season likely to be started behind closed doors, a lack of income from gate money could prove disastrous for Scottish clubs with almost half their income coming from supporters.

But McInnes believes that broadcast deals are key to saving Premiership clubs from financial chaos during the coronavirus pandemic.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack previously stated the Dons would lose £5million over the next few months if football remains in lockdown.

And McInnes can't see there being too much change in social distancing rules that would allow clubs to raise money through ticket sales.

He told the Evening Express: “Trying to find a revenue stream from the current situation is the challenge.

“Broadcasters are key to this as we try to fill the gaps of the normal revenue and income streams from attendances.

“The top-flight is where the television deal is and for Premiership clubs to still perform and operate we are going to need some sort of revenue coming in to help us – closed-door games if that is the next step.

"I think everyone accepts that when we do go back it will be very different in the top-flight. To go from social distancing as we are now, to all of a sudden being able to congregate in large numbers, is just not going to happen.

“So we need that in-between stage to be as productive as possible, both in a competitive sense and also a financial sense.”
