Derek McInnes hands Aberdeen pre-Europa League qualifying boost as he agrees new contract at Pittodrie

Derek McInnes has agreed a new contract at Aberdeen which will keep him at Pittodrie until at least 2022.

The Dons boss is preparing to lead his club into Europe for the sixth successive season, beginning with Thursday's qualifying first round clash with RoPS of Finland.

McInnes was entering the final 12 months of his deal at Pittodrie but, along with assistant Tony Docherty, has now agreed terms to extend that until 2022.

The former Rangers midfielder turned down a return to Ibrox two season ago after being targeted as a replacement for Pedro Caixinha.

He has also been linked with Sunderland and the Scotland job after consistently having the Dons battling for honours at the top of the table.

Five successive second place finishes finally came to an end last season when Aberdeen came in fourth after Rangers and Kilmarnock.

But McInnes is rated highly by chairman Stewart Milne and has played a central role in the Dons' move to a new stadium and training facility.

McInnes said: "I am delighted we have been able to agree new contracts with the club.

"The staff, players and I are committed to trying to deliver success and build upon all we have achieved in the past six years.

"With the opening of our new training campus at Kingsford on the horizon I am excited about the prospect of training professionally in a modern facility, something which should be in keeping with the ambitious club we are.

"It's no secret that I love working for this club and I will strive to continue to try and create those special moments for our supporters. Working closely together I believe this is possible.

"Lastly, I would like to thank the chairman and the board who deserve great credit for their backing this summer as we look to re-build a competitive team."
