Derek McInnes given Aberdeen playing style kicking as former Dons defender identifies 'pressure' point

Former Aberdeen defender Richard Foster believes it's the style of play that has some supporters calling for Derek McInnes to go.

The Dons boss is coming under increasing scrutiny having managed just one win since the turn of the year, with Hibs taking a 2-0 victory at Easter Road on Saturday.

But while results having taken a dip, Foster believes that's not the catalyst for increasing discontent from a section of fans.

The Partick Thistle full-back insists McInnes isn't getting the best from a talented squad and that's what really drives frustration.

Speaking on Sportscene Foster said: "If you're the manager of Aberdeen there's always going to be pressure.

"I think when you've got the quality that he's got in the squad that brings its own pressure.

"Just the brand of football they're playing, it's not attractive to watch.

"If you're an Aberdeen fan paying to watch that it's not great.

"I think that probably is where the frustration comes from.

"Yes they're fourth in the league and can go within two points of Hibs if they win their game in hand, but it's not been enjoyable to watch this season.

"I think they struggle with that formation, I don't think it allows them to get the best out of the players they've got.

"But a manager at Aberdeen is always going to be under pressure."

Fellow pundit Michael Stewart agreed, acknowledging that things have gone downhill in recent years.

He said: "It's a conundrum.

"I think everybody recognises that it's drifted slightly in the last couple of years.

"They've finished fourth in the last couple of seasons, the standards are not there.

"But Derek McInnes has done such a good job for Aberdeen that it's a real gamble if you're going to change.

"Because there's always risk with an appointment. With Derek McInnes I don't think there is that level of risk.

"But, equally, things are not as good as they should be at the moment."
