Derek McInnes calls for patience as Aberdeen boss urges SPFL to let season end on the pitch

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has called on the SPFL to delay their final decision on the season and give teams a chance to finish on the pitch.

Under the current plans, if the Premiership season was to end and be decided on a points per game average, Aberdeen would sit fourth in the table behind Motherwell.

That should give them a Europa League place depending on the Scottish Cup but McInnes is desperate for the opportunity to claw back the deficit and catch 'Well in third.

And he insists it's the same for Celtic, Rangers and Hearts who will all want to battle it out for their respective spots.

He feels Celtic will be desperate to win the league on the pitch, Rangers want the chance to catch their rivals and Hearts are desperate to stay up.

But with a deadline set for Friday for the plans to be voted on by the 42 SPFL clubs, McInnes could be out of luck.

He told Clyde Superscoreboard: "I know it’s been a few weeks and a period of time without football but the UEFA executive committees are having a meeting on April 23 and I don’t think we need to make any decision until we know the outcome of that meeting.

"We feel that we deserve the chance to finish 3rd, Hearts deserve the chance to stay up, Rangers deserve the chance to catch Celtic, Celtic deserve the chance to win the league properly and do it on the pitch.

"Everybody wants that to be the case. We all want the opportunity for the season to conclude. Sporting integrity, all the rest of it. In the lower leagues as well, it’s the argument for loads of clubs to do the right thing.

"There will come a point, but I don’t think that point is now to be making that decision.

"I still think we need to be giving this a bit of time. I think we can fire the players up and get them ready to finish this season. The likelihood is becoming less and less but while there’s still a chance, we’ve got to hang on to it.

"At the minute, such a big decision shouldn’t be made purely on financial payments for the clubs, it’s too important for that.

"We can loan the money because we know the money is coming anyway and help clubs out, because we know how stretched the clubs are."
