Derek McInnes and Rino Gattuso out of Rangers running as search for Steven Gerrard replacement continues

Former Ibrox midfielders Rino Gattuso and Derek McInnes have been ruled out of the running for the Rangers job, according to a report.

The pair were just two of a number of names that have been linked to the role, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Frank Lampard have emerged as the frontrunners.

McInnes, who hasn't managed since leaving Aberdeen after eight years in March, and Gattuso are not being considered by the club hierarchy, reports Sky Sports News.

Van Bronckhorst is thought to be the preferred option to replace Steven Gerrard and met with officials in London today.

Lampard is also expected to discuss the role at the Scottish Premiership champions at some point over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Rangers are also impressed by two left-field options in Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen and KV Oostende boss Alexander Blessin.

However, should van Bronckhorst's meeting with club chiefs go well, he could be in the hot seat to face Hibs in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden next Sunday.
