Derek McInnes' Aberdeen agony goes on as unwanted 118-year club record looms ahead of Celtic crunch

Toothless Aberdeen will set a new 118-year-old unwanted club record of failing to find the net if they don't score at Parkhead on Wednesday against Celtic before the 72nd minute.

The Dons' luckless run in front of goal continued in the draw with St Mirren meant they have now gone five games without scoring - only the fourth time in their history they have done that and two of them have come under manager Derek McInnes.

Aberdeen have previously played five games in all competitions without a goal in 1905, 1973, 2020 and 2021 and the longest run of minutes without a goal happened when they failed to score in 535 minutes, 48 years ago.

Their current run stretches for 463 minutes, since Andrew Considine scored Aberdeen's second goal against Motherwell in a 2-0 win on January 23. Since then Aberdeen have failed to score against St Johnstone, Livingston twice, Hibs and St Mirren.

Last year, the Pittodrie side went 469 minutes of football without a goal from a 1-0 Scottish Cup win against Dumbarton until a Curtis Main goal at Hamilton. Motherwell, St Mirren, Rangers, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock held firm against the Dons.

But the record stands at 485 minutes without a goal which happened under Jimmy Bonthrone, from a Scottish Cup victory against Falkirk on February 28, 1973 when Stevie Murray scored, until a Davie Robb goal in a 2-0 win at Kilmarnock on March 24.

However, they did play Celtic three times in that spell - twice in the Scottish Cup and once in the league, as well as St Johnstone and Partick Thistle.

And in 1905, two-year-old Aberdeen went 463 minutes without a goal in between seasons which included their first ever campaign in the top flight, which they've never been relegated from since.

Aberdeen couldn't score against Falkirk, Arthurlie and Leith Athletic in Division Two and Partick Thistle and Rangers in Division One.
