NEW YORK — A pair of New York legends are teaming up for an ESPN documentary about the Yankee great who retired the No. 2. Spike Lee has signed-on to executive produce a six-part ESPN series about Derek Jeter called “The Captain,” due out in 2022.
“This is my story, the story of a kid with big dreams,” Jeter said Tuesday during Disney’s upfront presentation. “The challenges and conflicts that made me question if I was on the right path. The story of success, but even more, about what it took to find that success. What it takes to live, breathe and be No. 2.”
The series will be directed by another success story from the Bronx. Randy Wilkins, the three time Emmy winner who edited Lee’s “The Greatest Catch Ever,” which documents the Giants' thrilling 2008 Super Bowl win.
“The documentary series will use Jeter’s journey as a vessel to tell a larger cultural story that explores race, family, community, rivalries and more,” ESPN said in a statement.
In April 2020, the network enjoyed great success with the 10-part series “The Last Dance,” which chronicled Michael Jordan’s six titles with the Chicago Bulls.
Major League Baseball and Jeter’s website The Players Tribune are also involved in producing the homage to Jeter.
