Derek Ferguson blasts James Tavernier for ruining Rangers' 'aura' and makes fine claim

Derek Ferguson claims James Tavernier has ruined the 'aura' around Rangers with his comments in the club's matchday programme.

The Ibrox skipper made a surprise omission in the club's matchday programme before the game against Hamilton that Rangers can't deal with domestic rivals getting in their faces as he offered an insight into their wretched form.

And Ferguson reckons Tavernier's remarks could have serious consequences moving forward.

The former Rangers midfielder played against his boyhood club for the likes of Hearts, Dunfermline and Falkirk after leaving Ibrox, and believed players were always overawed by facing them.

But he reckons that there's no way that will happen now for current Premiership clubs after Tavernier's comments.

The pundit also insists he would have been been hit in the pocket by any of his Rangers managers if he had made similar comments.

He told BBC Sportsound: "As a Rangers or Celtic player, I played against them for Falkirk and Dunfermline, there was always an aura about both teams. When they stepped into the stadium or stepped onto the park, with the backing they had, there was an aura about them.

"With those comments from Tavernier, that aura disintegrates, disappears. Players start to fancy it, they’re thinking ‘hey there’s a weakness there, we can exploit that’ so you don’t give everything away.

"You use everything you have to your advantage.

"Steven Gerrard will be scratching his head. Up until the break, the quality was there in the way they played. Then the pressure came on and Steven Gerrard thought he had the players to deal with it, evidently it’s not worked out that way.

"If I had come out with that, there’s two things that would have happened, I would have been dropped and I would have been fined. Simple as that."
