Derek Chauvin: Bail for police officer charged with killing George Floyd set at £983,000

Ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has made his first appearance in court over the death of George Floyd.

Chauvin appeared virtually at the Public Safety Facility in Minneapolis, where Judge Jeannice Reding granted a prosecution motion to set unconditional bail at $1.25 million (£983,000) or $1 million (£786,000) with conditions, CNN reports.

Chauvin - who pressed his knee on the unarmed black man's death for nearly nine minutes as he pleaded for his life - faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

He was initially charged with third-degree murder after being sacked by Minneapolis Police Department, before the charges were increased last week.

Since his arrest, he has been detained in isolation in Ramsey County Jail in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He made the brief court appearance alone via video link, handcuffed in an orange jumpsuit, Star Tribune reports.

The former officer, who faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted, did not enter a plea.

He is next expected to appear in court on June 29.

Mr Floyd, 46, died in police custody on May 25, leading to a fortnight of widespread protests against racial discrimination across the United States and worldwide.

In a clip that went viral, Chauvin, 44, can be seen pressing on Mr Floyd's neck as he screams 'please, please' and calls for his mum, saying he cannot breathe.

Three more officers - Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao - have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.

It comes as an emotive final memorial service for Mr Floyd was held today in his hometown of Houston, Texas, where he lived before moving to Minneapolis.

Since his death, councillors in Minneapolis have pledged to dismantle and rebuild the city's police department.
