Derek Carr’s contract proving to be a value for the Oakland Raiders

When the Oakland Raiders signed Derek Carr to a five-year extension in 2017, he was the highest-paid player in the NFL. He received $40 million in guarantees and $69 million over the first three years of the deal. At the time, the deal seemed outrageous. Now, it’s proving to be a value.

In a recent article Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, he named every team’s best contract entering this season. For the Raiders, that was none other than Carr. Take a look at some of his thoughts on the former Fresno State passer and his contract:

Two offseasons ago, Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension. The deal briefly made him the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback, but it looks affordable now.

Carr is set to earn $22.5 million in 2019, less than what Giants quarterback Eli Manning will earn.

According to Over The Cap, Carr’s average salary per year is ninth among all quarterbacks. However, with passers like Dak Prescott and Jared Goff set to receive extensions this season, Carr will continue to become a screaming value. Over the next four seasons, Carr is set to count for less than $86 million against the cap; an average of less than $21.5 million per season.

With the going rate of a franchise passer being well over $30 million, the Raiders have one very team-friendly contract on their hands. That should allow them to stay competitive over the next few seasons. Carr’s contract to continue to be a value over the next several seasons.
