Derek Adams' former striker reveals real reason behind explicit touchline blast aimed at Scottish boss

Newport County veteran Kevin Ellison screamed in the face of Derek Adams then revealed he did it because the Scot "disrespected" him.

Ellison sprinted to the dug out and roared at the Morecambe manager after scoring against the Shrimps on Saturday afternoon.

The striker secured a vital win in the Exiles’ push for promotion from League Two when he added to Matty Dolan’s penalty and Josh Sheehan’s drilled effort in a 3-1 win.

It made it the perfect return to Morecambe for Ellison, who is a club legend after 391 appearances and 88 goals for the club between 2011 and 2020.

His nine-year association with the club came to an end last year, after former Aberdeen star Adams deemed him surplus to requirements.

He was contemplating life after football before County boss Michael Flynn offered him a one-year deal – and gave the veteran a chance for revenge.

Ellison said: “Maybe people will say it was written in the stars. I was quite happy with it as you could see from my celebration.

“The way Derek Adams treated me was disrespectful, so why not. I’m glad Newport got the result and I owed them one.

“Newport County put food on the table for me and my kids so that’s where my loyalties lie.”

After Ellison scored he says he was thinking about the "home dugout, that’s all."

He continued: “It was the way he went about saying things. If he had been honest enough, and man enough, to tell me ‘I don’t fancy you, you’re 41, go and find a club’, I’d have respected him for that.

“But he didn’t. He did things behind my back, but it came back to bite him on Saturday, didn’t it?”

Ellison came off the bench in the Rodney Parade win against the Shrimps and was thrilled to make it a double.

He added: “I’m just sorry it didn’t happen in the home game as well because it would have been nice to do it in both fixtures against them.

“I knew something was going to happen. I was more than happy with my celebration, I don’t care what anyone says. He disrespected me, I don’t like him, that’s how it goes.”
