Derbyshire school on lockdown as police called to reports of man with gun

A Derbyshire school was put on lockdown as armed police responded to reports of a man with a gun.

Witnesses reported seeing armed officers and police vans flooding Briar Gate in Long Eaton from around 8am this morning.

Police were called to reports of a man with a firearm and a 49-year-old man has now been arrested.

Wilsthorpe School said it was keeping students indoors due to the “ongoing police incident”, according to Derbyshire Live.

Police have confirmed that no shots were fire by either officers or the man under arrest.

A large cordon was put in place and bystanders were told to stand back from the area.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: "Officers were called to a property on Briar Gate in Long Eaton at 7.45am this morning to reports of a man with a firearm.

"Armed officers were deployed to the scene along with negotiators.

"A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and is in police custody.

"There have been rumours in the area that gun shots were fired, we can confirm that no shots were fired by officers or by the man under arrest."
