Derbyshire’s Bowmer and Kirkland scoops top award for school builds

A Derbyshire construction giant has received a top award for delivering millions of pounds worth of new schools.

Bowmer and Kirkland, headquartered at Heage, was named Contractor of the Year by the Department for Education (DfE) for its high value band of works on its school building programme.

The award is in recognition of the firm’s approach, culture and success in bidding and delivering schemes on schools worth over £12 million.

Bowmer and Kirkland was appointed to the DfE’s National Framework in 2013 and Regional Framework in 2014. It has since delivered 44 schools with a value of £581.5 million.

The first projects delivered through the framework were six Derby schools – Asterdale Primary, Carlyle Infant School, Cavendish Close Junior School, Chaddesden Park Primary, Reigate Primary and Allestree Woodlands Academy.

The award was presented by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the DfE, Lord Agnew, and was voted for by members of the department, along with representatives from its technical advisor firms.

Chris Arno, framework director at Bowmer and Kirkland, who collected the award along with fellow framework director James Vaux-Anderson, said: “We are honoured to have received this distinction from the Department for Education.

“While James and I were there to receive the award it has been a collective effort by our pre-construction and delivery teams.

“Their hard work, commitment, tenacity and engagement with the framework process over the last five years has enabled us to win this award. They should all be very proud of themselves.”
