A business set up by two businesswomen from Derby which sells curry spice kits to ex-pats on Spain’s Costa del Sol has been boosted following an appearance on BBC’s Countryfile show.
Nilam Wright and Veena Josh, are the founders of Curry On Cooking, which operates cookery classes, retreats and produces a range of eight curry kits.
They came up with the idea for the business after identifying a gap in the market for authentic curry kits for ex-pats living on the continent.
It all started when Nilam moved to Costa Calida, where she struggled to obtain the right spices to make an authentic curry.
The pair, who dub themselves the ‘spice sisters’ have previously been featured on the Channel 5 show, Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun.
Now, they have made another television appearance, after being featured in the latest edition of Countryfile, which aired on Sunday night.
The show turned the spotlight on Derbyshire food producers based in the Peak District.
In the programme, presenters Anita Rani and Sean Fletcher were given a masterclass in Indian bread making and were given an insight into food eaten at one of the most important winter thanksgiving festivals in the Indian calendar.
The spice kits produced by Curry On Cooking come with a shopping list and a recipe, with the flavours reflecting what’s on offer in high street curry houses, such as Madras, Korma, Tikka Masala, Jalfrezi and Balti dishes, as well as Bombay potatoes.
Nilam said: “We are both passionate about showcasing ‘real’ Indian food and taking the fear out of cooking from scratch, providing a healthy alternative to jars - the convenience without the compromise.
“The kits have no nasties – they are free from sugar, gluten, dairy, nuts, additives, and preservatives and suitable for vegans.”
