A company that is thought to be Derby’s oldest firm of architects has been acquired by its management team.
Morrison Design, based at St Alkmunds House, in Belper Road, has been bought by directors Peter Newman-Earp, David Gardner and Nik Clarke.
They have bought the business from former owners George Love and Nigel Walding, the latter of whom will continue to be involved in the business in a consultancy role.
Morrison Design was founded back in 1948 by war veteran Sam Morrison. The firm provides architectural design, planning and project management services on commercial design and build and refurbishment projects for hotels, schools, fire stations and company offices and manufacturing facilities.

Over the years, it has worked on many local projects, as well as overseas. Locally, they include schemes at Morley Hayes, Rolls-Royce and Lubrizol.
Morrison was also involved in the creation of a £91 million five-star hotel in Grand Caymen and multiple hotel projects in London, Dublin and Portugal.
Between them, the new owners of the firm, which employs 20 staff, have cumulatively worked for the practice for more than 50 years.
According to the firm, the buyout deal was completed some months ago, but it has remained confidential until recently to ensure all clients were personally informed.
Mr Gardner said: “It’s a great relief to be able to talk more publicly about the deal and announce our plans for building our business as a team.
“We have worked on some really high-profile projects in the past, and going forward we hope to profile our work more prominently as we seek to expand our portfolio of clients and further build our credibility.”
Outgoing director Mr Love said: “After 40 years at the practice, almost 30 of which has been as a director, Morrison Design is a very special place to me.
“I’m delighted that the management buy-out heralds a new phase in the life of the company under the guidance of Peter, David and Nik.
“I feel sure that their skills and expertise will secure a rosy future and they have my best wishes and whole-hearted support.”
