Derby Road expected to reopen overnight after 'significant' gas leak repair

Repair works to a busy city centre road are hoped to be completed overnight.

Derby Road was closed at 7am on October 8 heading into the city between the QMC Island and Gregory Street for emergency repairs to a 'significant' gas leak.

Major delays were reported as a result of the road closure.

Cadent, the company carrying out the works, said they were working to repair a gas leak on a large, 12-inch diameter gas main.

The company said: "The leak is on a significant gas feed into Nottingham and in a deep excavation."

Originally work wasn't expected to finish until 5am on Friday morning.

However, it is hoped the road will now reopen by 5am on October 9, according to Nottingham City Council.

A council spokesman said: "Backfilling of the excavation will take place throughout the night and Cadent Gas are planning to open the inbound carriageway before 5am tomorrow morning.

"We will continue to monitor and work with Cadent Gas to both communicate and minimise disruption.

"To help ease some of the traffic disruption, the temporary traffic management arrangements that Cadent Gas put in place have been managed/amended by the traffic officer."

Nottingham City Transport experienced delays to its Orange 34, 35, 36 and N34 buses and people travelling to the Queen's Medical Centre were affected.

Trentbarton also reported suffering severe delays on its services heading into Nottingham.
