Derby owner Mel Morris is in talks with a US consortium about finally selling up.
Morris,65, wants to offload the Championship Rams after putting in £200million of his own money into the club since taking over in 2015.
The team, managed by Wayne Rooney, stayed up on the final day with a draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
But the Rams are now sweating on a fine or possible points deduction after the EFL won an appeal over FFP against some of the club's accounting practises.
The EFL are trying to conclude the case swiftly and any points deduction this season could see Derby go down and 22nd placed Wycombe survive.
It is another major headache for Morris who has already seen proposed takeovers by Spanish businessman Erik Alonso and Sheikh Khaled bin Saquer Zayed Al Nahyan collapse.
But there could be hope on the horizon for Derby with Morris in discussions with a US group who have experience in sport.
After beating the drop on the final day boss Rooney insisted there was no more time to waste.
Rooney pleaded: “We need clarity, it’s been difficult.
“It needs to get sorted out as soon as possible.
“We cannot have any more mess ups, no more messing around.
“It has to happen.”
Rooney has several players out of contract like striker Martyn Waghorn and Curtis Davies who may yet stay if the club have enough financial muscle.
Davies, 36, ignored medical advice after surgery on his Achilles in December to make a surprise comeback off the bench against the Owls without a single training session.
Davies said: “I felt I could give the manager ten-15 minutes at either end of the pitch if needed.
“I'd have rather not been needed but am happy to have come on and contributed a little bit.
“Legally the medical department didn't give me the go-ahead but I took it on my own back."
