Derby owner confirms stance on Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney

Derby County owner Mel Morris has confirmed the club are trying to sign the former Manchester United captain.

Rooney left Old Trafford in 2017 to return to boyhood club Everton before signing for Major League Soccer side DC United last year but looks set to make a return to England as Derby County confirmed their interest in the striker.

Reports suggest the Championship club, who won their first game of the new campaign against Huddersfield 2-1 on Monday night, are looking at a possible player-coach role for Rooney at Pride Park.

And the club's interest was confirmed by Morris as Rooney headed to Derby for a medical on Monday.

"It has literally been a couple of days in the offing," Morris told talkSPORT. "The starting point was we understood Wayne was keen to return to UK. We looked to see if we could do anything on the back of it.

"The key thing has been the conversations with Cocu, they were integral to the interest Wayne has. It isn't done until it is done. We are focused and keen to get it over the line this morning.

"I'm sure once people hear news it has broken there will inevitably be interest on the back of that. I am confident we will sort it out.

"Why wouldn't we want a player with his background and playing career. He has demonstrated his leadership qualities over in the USA. Cocu is as excited as I am."

Rooney became United's all-time leading goalscorer during his 13 seasons at the club scoring 253 goals and eclipsing the record held previously by Sir Bobby Charlton.
