Derby County still selling Richard Keogh jerseys - despite sacking Ireland defender

Derby County are continuing to sell jerseys with Richard Keogh's name on the back - despite sacking the Ireland defender two weeks ago.

The Rams booted the 33-year-old out of the club for his involvement in a car crash after a boozy night out with his teammates in September.

Keogh was a back-seat passenger in the incident which saw team-mates Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett arrested for drink-driving.

But despite Derby dismissing the defender, they are still selling shirts with their former captain's name.

Fans who try to buy the shirt, retailing at €66.49, get an email though checking if they want to continue with the purchase.

Also, it was reported by The Athletic that copies of the club’s 2020 calendar — featuring the Ireland defender on the front cover — were taken off sale in the club’s megastore and are being reprinted.

The PFA vowed last week that they would "robustly defend" Keogh after his £26,000-a-week contract was ripped up.

A PFA spokesman said: "We will robustly defend our member because we feel he has been unfairly treated."

And Ireland boss Mick McCarthy, speaking at the PFA Ireland awards on Saturday night, can't believe how Keogh has been treated by the Championship club.

McCarthy said: “I was on to Richie and the PFA just to make sure they were all looking after him because I’m astounded with what’s going on there, I really am.

“If Richard had got in an Uber and the Uber driver was drunk, I don’t think they’d have sacked him would they?"

Keogh's former teammates Lawrence and Bennett were given a 12-month community order when they appeared at Derby magistrates’ court last month, and were ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, as well given two-year driving bans.

And Derby fined the pair maximum six weeks' wages for the incident.

But the duo have continued to feature for the club with Lawrence starting in a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
