Derby County set to beat Bristol City, Rangers and Celtic to signing of Aberdeen captain - reports

Derby County have reportedly won the race to sign Graeme Shinnie.

The Daily Telegraph's John Percy said on Twitter that the Rams are set to confirm the signing of Shinnie on a three-year deal, joining as a free agent ahead of next season.

Aberdeen captain Shinnie is said to have been a long-term target of Bristol City, with the Robins having originally been linked with the versatile midfielder, who can also play left-back, last summer.

With the 27-year-old's deal at Aberdeen running out this summer, the Robins were once again linked with a move for him, but they faced some serious competition.

The Rams, Celtic, Rangers and Wigan Athletic were all reportedly keeping tabs on his situation, with Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes also not ruling out the prospect of keeping hold of him.

Eros Pisano and Stefan Marinovic released as Bristol City reshape squad for next season

Yet the race seemed as good as over last month when Shinnie was pictured having talks with Derby at their Pride Park Stadium - although, with no confirmation of the signing, there was still speculation that a club could hijack the deal at the last moment.

However, Percy now says he expects the deal to be confirmed imminently, meaning the Robins will have to look elsewhere should they still wish to strengthen in Shinnie's position.
