Derby County set for major fitness boost ahead of Leeds United play-off semi-final

Derby County manager Frank Lampard has given an update on the fitness of left-back Ashley Cole ahead of the Championship play-off semi-final against Leeds United on Saturday.

Ashley Cole missed the last four games of the regular season with a groin injury.

Lampard told the Derby Telegraph: "He is close. I am pleased we are in the play-offs, it gives us an extra week or 10 days at least, and gives Ashley a chance to be in contention for Saturday."

Former Huddersfield Town defender Scott Malone has been playing in the left-back position in Cole's absence, but Derby will be boosted by the return of the former England international.

"Ashley is important," said Lampard.

"He was in the dressing room before and after the West Brom[wich Albion] game.

"Of course we want him fit, and we want him to be able to contribute on the pitch. Hopefully, the extra week will give him time to do that."

Derby County finished the season strongly, securing sixth place and a play-off position on the last day of the season when they beat West Bromwich Albion.

They head into the clash with Leeds United on a six-match unbeaten run, which has included four wins. Leeds United haven't won in the last four games.
